Dutch music

What about Dutch music?

To be honest, I am really wondering what expats think of Dutch music. I mean, if you’re not into Dance music our singers are a bit...Well, old fashioned I guess, for the most part. Then, of course, there's Nederhop… lets say its an acquired taste! If you do like dance though, you’ll probably know our DJs (like DJ Tiësto) are pretty famous, I can imagine that if you hear songs in Dutch… it might not be what you’d put on to relax or something you’d find a pleasure. I am also not sure if I should be ashamed of Dutch, especially of Happy hardcore.

A Dutch friend of mine showed ‘Happy Hardcore to her expat friends in Dubai (as a joke)... They really looked at her like she was crazy… 🙂 🙂

Dutch music - ashamed or proud?

Other music/artists I am not sure if I should be proud or ashamed, or if you just should be a little tipsy to enjoy it:

Vengaboys; I mean who doesn’t know them. Their songs are “Boom, Boom, Boom’ and “We are going to Ibiza” and many more.

Carnavals music; Once a year with Carnaval (especially celebrated in the southern parts of the Netherlands), we dress up funny, drink lots and dance (can I call it dance?) to this kind of music. It is also referred to as, Apres-Ski music (don’t forget, the Netherlands is flat… so you can’t ski here).

Andre Hazes; One of the most famous folk singers. Lot’s of Dutchies love him, he even has a statute in Amsterdam (Albert Cuypstraat).

Dutch musicians

Okay, okay.. I understand that I directed your opinion into a certain direction.. But believe me… we have some pretty good musicians as well.

Dutch DJs

In the Netherlands we have a pretty good party scene, we have quite some famous DJs like Martin Garrix, Hardwell, Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, Nicky Romero, Fedde Le Grand, Ferry Corsten and as I mentioned before DJ Tiësto.

Dutch musicians (with famous songs)

The list isn’t in any order (I believe it really depends on when you were born and your music taste). Study this list and you are definitely able to show off with your Dutch friends.

Mr. Probz - Waves
Alain Clark - Father & Friend
Shocking Blue - Venus
2 Unlimited - No Limit
Natalie La Rose - Somebody
Alice Deejay - Better off Alone
Junkie XL -  A little less conversation
Golden Earring - Radar Love
Within Temptation - Mother Earth

De Electronica’s - De Vogeltjesdans

Of course, there are more songs from Dutch make famous outside the Netherlands...but I believe this is a good start. There is way more to tell about Dutch music like our Folk Music and ‘Nederhop’! More about this next month...

Stay tuned 😛
