How to get a phone, internet & tv connection?
So by now hopefully things are settling down, nice! As the title implies, I will tell you more about your phone (does anyone still use this?), internet and tv connection. And of course, how you can get the best deals (see below for the price comparison tool). You have probably learned by now that the Dutch love 'cheap' and 'value for money'.
If you have rented a property in the Netherlands please check in your lease agreement if there are additional charges for phone, internet and television. If this is the case, please ask for your landlord if he can show you the receipts (or provide you with a login to the website from the utility providers). In general, the costs are fixed, but if you use more than stated in your contract (eg. you make international calls), you need to pay extra at the end of the month. If you have to arrange your electricity and water yourself, please continue reading.
Please ask your landlord for the utility bills to make sure there is no additional mark up on the price.
In case you have bought your own place, you can still get the communications services transferred to your name or you need a new connection.
Landline connections in the Netherlands
If you are searching for fixed-line phone connections in the Netherlands, then KPN Telecom is your go-to company. Some documents that you need to have with yourself for registering to have a fixed line connection, include residence permit, proof of identity and proof of address. You might have to submit a deposit, which will be refunded once you have successfully made payments for your connection over a specified period of time.
Internet and Television
Is your TV compatible with the network?
In the year 2006, the Netherlands switched their mode of television to an all-digital broadcasting network. More than 84% of households have digital tv. But there are still options for analogue too.
The three main standards of television that you can find in the Netherlands include Cable (DVB-C), Satellite (DVB-S) and Terrestrial (DVB-H/DVB-T). Sometimes the IPTV standard is used in the Netherlands. In most countries, digital television is used. If this is not the case in your country, it might be worth it to check if your TV is compatible with the network in the Netherlands.
Which TV subscription should I get?
Kabel TV - Kabel TV is free in the Netherlands. Included in this are 170 channels like NPO 1,2 and 3, RTL 4 and 5, BBC one and two, CNN etc.
Digital TV - Is a paid subscription, depending on how many channels you want if you want to be able to watch 'on-demand' movies/series. You have a subscription ranging from €5,- a month to €13,- a month.
Good thing to know, we don't dubb movies and series in the Netherlands. The original language of the movie/series will be used with Dutch subtitles. There is an exception for shows for children.
Satellite television - This is another option but not that common. In case you would like to have satellite TV check with your landlord first.
In order to set up your home’s internet, you can select from a list of many providers. ADSL/VDSL lines, fibre broadband and cables are the most common forms of internet connectivity available in the Netherlands. In general, the speed and connection of the internet is good. In some small towns, it might be slower. The price you pay for your internet connection depends on the service you select. Follow the steps below to see what kind of internet you need:
The first thing that you need to figure out is which internet service providers provide a connection in your area. The options that you can avail in the Netherlands include ADSL, DSL, fibre and cable, but not every address is equipped to receive each of these connections. Below some comparison, websites to see which connection you can get and to compare the prices.
In general, Ziggo is the most well-known and best provider.
